These are the products I use for my braidouts. As usual I keep it simple. Believe it or not, the secret to getting a great braidout can be as simple as using conditioner mixed with water. Of course technique plays a big part too. But read on to see the products I use.

I want to point out that reading this is meaningless if you haven’t already seen my braidout tutorials.

Moisturizer: Equal parts conditioner and water in a spray bottle.

Silkener: Generic Value Product Silk Remedy. I rub this on my hair before braiding my hair. I make sure I get a good amount on my hair ends so it doesn’t come out frizzy. I also apply a small amount to my hair upon undoing my braids to keep the frizz at bay. It makes my hair soft and silky, plus it gives great shine also. It does not make my hair greasy, it is super lightweight and doesn’t weigh my hair down. I love it.

Oil: When doing braidouts I Sometimes I add Olive oil to my ends while I am braiding my hair or add it to my conditioner and water mix and spray on my hair. ( I use the kind you cook with). It makes my hair shiny of course and fights the frizz. I don’t use the oil very often or use alot because it does make my hair greasy…duh. I use it for hot oil treatments.

Satin Wrapping Scarf or Satin Fabric:

Scarf:

These can be purchased at local BSS for about for $3 each. Unfortunately, they are not very big.

I cut lengthwise strips from the satin scarf to braid my hair with. The width you cut is totally up to you, I cut mine about 7″ wide. So I end up with 7″ X approx 48″ strips of satin fabric. The narrower the strips of satin, the tighter and smaller your curls will be. I braid my hair with the whole satin scarf for looser, bigger curls.

Satin Fabric in Black

As an alternative you can buy the satin fabric itself and skip getting the scarves. The fabric comes in 9ft x 4 ft wide pieces and it is only $5.48. It is more than 5 times bigger than the scarves they sell in stores. Which means you get a better bang for your buck. I was really excited when I found this because I was tired of running to the store to buy a satin scarf whenever I needed more satin strips for my braidouts.

The fabric is available on Amazon.com Check it out.

This is how much fabric you get for 5 bucks

can i use this conditioner/water mix daily?

can i use it when i wear my hair straight?

    • Zann says:

You know denise, I have never used the conditioner and water mix when I am wearing my hair straight. But I should try it one day. There is a member here KC/blueandblessed who said she has used it to air dry and I don’t think she was doing a braidout after. So by all means, try it. And yes, I think you can use it daily of you want, but I don’t think you’d want to do it daily when wearing your hair straight. You will just be giving yourself more work.

        How did I miss this one? Yes mam your conditioner/water mix is da bum. It takes air drying to a whole new level…Of course I also use it to moisturize and seal(on dry hair)-whowho and LOL…:}

This is great. Ive been loking for a better way to do my braidouts…what do you suggest for shorter kinkier/natural hair? two or tree braids wont cut it for me..I ususally do medium sized braid all over. should I cut the scarf into smaller/shorter pieces? What do you suggest.
    TIA

Hi, if you have shorter hair, it may be better to do the cornrow braidout. But if you prefer to do the single braid braidout, then you may need to do more than 3 braids. Do as many as you normally do to start with. Based on how it turns out, you may decide that you don’t need so many or you need more. But only you can determine that.
Scarf – definitely cut the strips of scarf in half, the strips will be longer than you will need. I cut lengthwise strips from the scarf and keep my strips long because I think if I cut them, they might be too short to braid my hair with.

And Mam- the scarf will be to short, take it from me. I did that and made a hot mess…I ruin my scarf by cutting the strips in half….I make good use of my short strips though, I use them during my d/c in place of your wig cap. I tie a strip around my processing cap, to help hold more heat, and to catch the drips…

Zan, I tried your recipe for conditioner/water mix this time it work way much better than my recipe. By adding a few drops of oil to the mix, do you think it will alter or make it better?

    • Zann says:

I add a few drops of EVOO too. It helps, it gives your hair more shine without making it too greasy.

      • KC says:

Thanks, I added a few drops of oil to my mix, for the purpose of shine and to reduce the chance of frizz. It worked like a dream. Thanks for sharing…
