Frequently asked questions about the Satin Scarf Braidouts.
I decided instead of answering the same questions over and over (not very efficient) I’d put up a Braidout FAQ for all to can see.
If you cannot find the answer to your question, then ask it in the comment box below. Your question will be answered and added to FAQs below.

Apart from the satin scarves what else have you used to do a braidout?
I have used the belts from satin blouses. See the method I used and the results of my satin BELT braidout here.
Can you use other materials to do this braidout?
Satiny materials, nylon, and silk are the only fabrics I know that will protect your hair, not dry it out and leave it looking and feeling soft and silky. I would not recommend using cotton or wool. While it may work to give you some curls, the material is very drying to your hair and can cause more damage than good.
Can you use ribbons to do the braidout?
You can try it, but I cannot guarantee how the results will look.
I personally have NOT tried a braidout with ribbons.
I don't think ribbons can produce as good results as the actual satin fabric.
Reasons:
Ribbons are too thin
The widest ribbon would only be around 2" wide- not wide enough. I recommend at least 3" inches wide. The smaller the width of the fabric, the smaller curls you will get. I personally like bigger curls.
Ribbons do not have soft edges or curve at the edges as well as the satin fabric. The sharp edges could cause the hair to have indents and crinkles in some places.
Ribbons do not stretch- the satin scarves do
So for those reasons I haven't tried it. But I will try it at some point try it on a small section of my hair and post my results.
When doing cornrow braidouts, do you mix your hair into each section along with the scarf?
YES. Watch the cornrow method video. There is no getting around mixing your hair with the scarf while cornrowing. I treat the scarf as a part of my hair. I don't think about where I am placing the scarf I just cornrow.
When doing single braids with the scarf, do you mix your hair into each section along with the scarf?
NO. Watch the single braid method video. It clearly shows that my braid consists of 1 hair section and 2 scarf sections (2 ends of the scarf).
Where do you get the Silk Remedy?
I get the GVP Silk Remedy at Sally Beauty. Read more here
What are you spraying on your hair from the spray bottle?
I spray Vo5 moisturizing conditioner mixed with water in a spray bottle on my hair prior to braiding. For More information see Products I Use For My Braidouts.
Can this be done on wet hair/damp hair?
I never do braidouts on wet hair. It will take a really long time to dry. I recommend doing it on damp or dry hair. Of course I add moisturizers to my hair before braiding. See Braidout Tips – Secrets to a Better Braidout.
Will this satin scarf braidout work on shorter hair?
Yes. The cornrow method works better on short hair. While the single braid method works better on longer hair.
How big are the strips you cut?
I recommend cutting the strips at least 3 inches wide. But I cut my strips around 7" wide. The smaller the width of the fabric- the smaller the curls it produces.
Why do you use the strips of satin and what does that do versus regular braiding?
This information is posted on my "How To Do a Braidout" page.
How do you get the strips of satin?
I cut lengthwise strips from my satin fabric. This is the fabric I use.
Do you use strips or whole scarves to do your braidouts?
I use both. For bigger curls I use the entire satin scarf as opposed to strips. Obviously I have quite a few scarves. See Braidout Tips – Secrets to a Better Braidout.
Where did you get the clips you used in the video?
Read about my hair clips and where you can get some like them Here.
Is your hair rexlaxed?
Kinda...I am texlaxed. Read more about it here.
How long do you keep the braids in before unraveling them?
I keep the braids in until my hair completely dries. I don't do braidouts on wet hair. But my hair becomes slightly damp after applying my conditioner and water mix before braiding. The drying time is alot less than with soaking wet hair but it still takes my hair about 6 hours or overnight to dry in the braids. You can sit under a hair dryer or use a blow dryer (on low) to speed up the drying. The longer the braids stay in, the more defined your curls will be because it had more time to set.
Are the scarves expensive?
No, The scarves are at most $4 or as little as $2.50 depending on where you buy.
What brand are your scarves?
Stay On Satin, satin wrapping scarf. More information on the scarves and where to buy here.
Update: I now buy the Satin fabric from Amazon and use that instead of the scarves.
Are your scarves silk or satin?
They are satin. Stay On Satin, satin wrapping scarf.
Where did you get the scarves to buy?
You can get the scarves at Sally Beauty or other beauty supply stores. More information here.
Alternatively, you can also make your own scarves like I did by buying the satin fabric by the yard. Click here to find out how to do this
Why do you use the Satin Scarf to Braid your hair?
The short answer is - it gives me better curl definition, smooth, shiny, uniform curls that looks natural. The resuts look like I spent I ton of time to do it when it really only takes me 15 minutes! Anyway, to understand when and why I came up with the method- see the Braidout Page here.
