16 Things to Improve Your Hair

 1. Stop combing your hair from root to tip every single day. It’s okay to finger comb some days.

2.   Do not pile your hair up on your head while washing. It creates tangles that you do not need to deal with and combing out said tangles will definitely cause you to lose more hair than necessary.

3.   Wash hair in the shower instead of bending over the kitchen sink or bathtub. Let your hair hang down while shampooing and conditioning, instead of piling it up on top of your head. Detangle under the running water using a lot of conditioner. The steady flow of the water helps in the detangling process.

4.    Get rid of the cotton bandanas and opt for a satin/silk scarf to protect your hair at nights.

5.   Wear a satin hair bonnet  to bed.

6.   Sleep on a satin/silk pillowcase in the event that your scarf or bonnet comes off during the night. Silk/satin do not dry out your hair or cause it to snag on it or damage.

7.    Stop brushing. Only brush when absolutely necessary. I know it sounds crazy, but once you stop you wont even miss it.

8.  Stop wearing elastic pony tail holders that pull your hair out or cause breakage. The elastic ponytail holders with the metal seam are famous for this. Go for the No Damage elastic ponytail holders.

9.     Take a good multivitamin

10. Moisturize your hair daily or least on a regular basis. Hair oil and grease do not count as a moisturizer.

11.   Deep condition your hair with a good deep conditioner at least once per month.

12. Don’t do tight ponytails. They put a lot of tension on your hair, especially the edges and will either pull it out or cause breakage.

13.  Stop using heat everyday to style your hair. Cut down on the curling irons, and flat irons

14. Don’t double process your hair. i.e. don’t relax and permanently dye your hair. Choose the dye or the relaxer. Doing both will lead to breakage sooner or later.

15. Only relax your new growth, applying a relaxer to previously relaxed hair is a no no. There is a reason why a relaxer touchup is called a “touchup”. If your hairdresser applies relaxer to your entire head during your touchup, please correct her. A relaxer is a chemical and should be used very cautiously.

16.Don’t relax your hair too often. Give your hair some time to recover after each relaxer. 4 weeks is too often. Try relaxing every 6 weeks then work your way up to 8 weeks or more.

I sometimes leave a little conditioner in my hair from my wash. If not I just spray my hair with my conditioner water mix and then perhaps add some silk remedy.
It all depends on how I feel.

I am guilty of using the cotton bandanas at nights….the silk scarves always slide of by the time I wake up. I take multi-vitamins (when I remember to :-) …whats the diff between hair oil/grease and moisturizer? Most if not all the products claim to be a moisturizer, right now I have a few on my dresser….Lusters Olive oil lotion, vita pointe hairdress and palmers gro-treatment….

I don’t wear SILK scarves, I use the SATIN ones you can buy in Walmart, Sally’s, the beauty supply store, walgreens or CVS. They do NOT slide off my hair.

So you know what to do this weekend. Go to walmart and go get yourself a satin bonnet and satin scarf like the ones shown on this page. It’s the easiest change you can make.

A moisturizer by definition is something that causes moisture or a a condition of wetness; something that makes your hair moist by intruducing water (moisture).By that definition, an oil is not a moisturizer. A moisturizer would be something that is more creamy (water-based) and less oily. In my opinion, if it has oil in the name then it’s oil not a moisturizer. I use Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Cream leave in Conditioner to moisturize.
