Hair Types: What is Your Hair Type?

If you are new to hair care, talk of different hair types may be confusing to you. But don’t worry, it starts out that way for most of us. I have put together some information from various online sources that will help you understand what hair typing is. And hopefully help you determine what hair type you have.

There are 10 hair types (that I know of):

Type 1: Straight Hair

Type: 2A, 2B, 2C: Wavy Hair

Type: 3A, 3B, 3C: Curly Hair

Type: 4A, 4B, 4C : Coily /Kinky Hair

My hair type is 4A. Based on popular definition, type 4a hair is tightly coiled hair. It has a defined curl pattern and will make little S’s when stretched. The size of these coils can range from the diameter of a pencil to that of a pen spring.

←Pictured here, my hair is probably 3 months post relaxer. Sorry, don’t have any completely natural pics. See more pics of my coils here.

Type 4A hair shrinks a lot. My hair likes nothing better than to coil around itself. Type 4B hair unlike 4a hair does not have a definite curl pattern. Instead it forms more of a ‘Z’ pattern. It isn’t straight but it isn’t curly either. It is important to note that you can have a few different hair types on your head. While all my hair is type 4A, I have different sized 4A coils throughout my hair.

what is good for a 4a type hair for shampoo and that i can get at sallys store

Actually Liz, I only use one kind of Shampoo. And that is V05 moisturizing shampoo (moisture milks or herbal escapes). Not because it’s cheap but because it works really well with my hair. It makes my hair feel really good and smells good too. They don’t sell these at Sally’s but they sell them most places – walgreens, cvs, walmart, the supermarket etc.
Shampoos Sold at Sallys that I have never tried but heard good things about are Motions , GVP Nexxus, creme of nature, and Silk Elements.

      Hope that helps.

Ok so how about the conditioners. I found out that my lil gurl has a mixed of 4a/4b hair. i have that nappy 4b hair, thatis really thick. I need something to soften the hair. ITs all natural hair. any ideas. thanks

I have 4a hair and I’ve used alot of different conditioners in the past. They all softened my hair except for a few that I will never ever buy again. Buy the ones that say moisturizing. I personally avoid the herbal ones, the ones that have that minty, eucalyptus smell – the ones that make your scalp tingle. They make my hair feel disgusting and hard to comb out.
I don’t change up my products – I stick to anything that works for me. Therefore I have been using v05 for years now. I can’t remember from experience which other conditioners I liked. So unfortunately, I cannot suggest any particular brand. You can check out the conditioner from the same brand of shampoos I siggested prior.

Well Z, I certainly did not know that there were so many hair types…..with numbers! Wow!

  3. Peta says:

Ok, I guess I have to wait for my hair to grow out some more before I can figure out what type it is. It is definitely a 4 – I’m just not sure if it’s A, B or C. From what I can see so far, it coils some ways and curls in others.

    • Zann says:

Yeah you will definitely see your hair type better when it grows out more. For me I can tell my hair type from my 6 week post relaxer new growth.

Ah. Well, I haven’t relaxed since…September 2009. Maybe I just need to study the new growth more carefully. It’s like it’s trying to make up it’s mind as to what it is. :D It’s not tightly coiled, so I suspect that it’s either a B or a C (doesn’t quite form a ‘Z’ when I stretch it).

(Btw, this is Peta-Ann from Facebook and ICHS :D )

        • Zann says:

Oh what’s up girl? I’ve heard that by putting alot conditioner in your hair and combing the new growth with a fine tooth comb you will see if it forms S or Z. But hey, you can have both type 4a and 4b hair
