How To Protect Your Hair at Night

Many people ask, what do you do with your hair when you go to bed at nights?

What’s the right and wrong thing to do? There is no one right thing to do. But there is most definitely a wrong thing to do. And that is going to bed with your hair uncovered. In my opinion, unless your hair is made of silk, going to bed at night without your hair being covered is a bad idea.

What’s the harm in going to bed with your hair uncovered?

I don’t know about you but when I go to sleep, I DON’T stay in one sleeping position all night. I move about, and when I wake up in the morning if my hair is not covered, my hair looks every bit like my nocturnal tossing and turning. I am talking serious bed head. Imagine detangling dry, matted hair every morning. Apart from being annoying and time consuming, you are going to lose a serious amount of hair. This is so unnecessary. Just cover you hair at night.

What do you mean by “cover” your hair?

I am talking about investing in a satin/silk hair scarf, a satin/silk bonnet and a satin/silk pillowcase. You don’t have to use all of these things in combination. But if you are paranoid like me, you will use all three. You can wrap your hair in a scarf at night or cover with the bonnet. You can also use both just to be sure.

The pillowcase is backup in the event you forget your scarf or bonnet. If you still baulk at the idea of wearing something on your head while you sleep at night, just use the satin/silk pillowcase. It’s a lot better for your hair than sleeping on cotton.

What’s wrong with cotton?

Cotton will dry out your hair. That is the very quality of cotton, it absorbs. Silk or satin does no such thing. The friction of your hair rubbing against cotton all night will cause some broken hairs. No brainer, if you want to keep your hair looking nice and shiny, use a satin or silk scarf, bonnet or pillowcase.

If you are okay with dry thirsty looking hair every morning, so by all means, go for the cotton.

Silk/Satin

Both satin and silk are pretty good. It is believed that silk is better. However, silk is more expensive and satin stays on your head better because it’s not as slippery. Satin is cheap and works fine.

The advantages of nightly covering

  • your hair will be neat in the morning – no detangling, just style and go.
  • Your hair will still be shiny and moisturized
  • You will most likely keep all the hairs on your head that you went to bed with.

 Where to buy:

Amazon.com, Sally Beauty, Walgreens, Wal-Mart or CVS

If you have no adverse effects of not covering you hair at night, the above does not apply to you.

J-K I am glad that you feel more confident now hearing these things from me (just an ordinary girl). Over the last 5 years I’ve learned first hand that these things work, and the simple things like wrapping your hair at nights make a big difference. Don’t fall off the wagon girl, just get a goal in mind of what you want your hair to look like and do what it takes to get there. Keep checking back this site for tips and advice. Hopefully I can inspire you :)
